Generating Single-Line Diagrams and Plan Sets

Turn a saved system design into an editable SLD and a coordinated permit plan set, then review and regenerate the documents when the design changes.

Powerlily can generate a single-line diagram and coordinated plan-set content from the same system model used for the design and quote. Because these documents depend on the saved geometry, equipment, and electrical layout, finish and validate the design before generating final files.

Before you generate documents

Review the project and confirm that the saved design contains the information the documents need:

  • The correct project address, customer, utility, and site information.
  • Final module, inverter, battery, microgrid interconnection device, optimizer, and racking selections.
  • Complete string or microinverter branch assignments.
  • Accurate roof, array, setback, obstruction, property-line, and equipment locations.
  • Applicable jurisdiction and electrical-code context.

Powerlily can warn when only some panels are assigned to strings or branches. Treat that warning as a reason to review the electrical design before generating permit documents.

Generate from the project documents

Open the quote or project and go to its Documents tab. Choose the single-line diagram, plan set, or both. Powerlily opens the design workspace as needed, renders the requested document from the current saved model, and returns the result to the project.

You can also work with the SLD and plan-set tools inside the design workspace when you need to review or edit the result before export.

How the single-line diagram is built

The SLD is generated from the real string or branch layout rather than from a disconnected drawing. It can represent the selected modules, inverters, storage equipment, interconnection devices, conductors, overcurrent protection, and points of connection.

The editor supports conductor and OCPD work, voltage-drop review, equipment configuration, busbar and 120% rule alternatives, and NEC or CEC contexts. Available checks depend on the equipment data and project configuration.

Review the SLD

Inspect the generated electrical path from the array through conversion, storage, isolation, protection, and interconnection equipment. Check at least the following:

  • Every intended panel is assigned to a string or microinverter branch.
  • Strings are assigned to the correct inverter and MPPT.
  • Voltage, current, and power remain within the selected equipment limits.
  • Conductor sizes, ampacity, voltage drop, and OCPD selections are appropriate.
  • Service, busbar, supply-side or load-side connection details match the project.
  • Storage and backup equipment are represented in the correct AC- or DC-coupled arrangement.
  • Labels, ratings, notes, and code references match the authority having jurisdiction.

Generated checks are design aids. A qualified person must review the final electrical design and the requirements that apply to the installation.

Assemble the plan set

A plan set can combine coordinated sheets such as:

  • Cover and project-information sheets.
  • Site, parcel, and property-line information.
  • Roof and array layouts.
  • Dimensions, setbacks, pathways, obstructions, and annotations.
  • The single-line diagram and electrical notes.
  • Equipment locations and connection details.
  • Required placards and labels.
  • Product specification sheets.
  • Revision records and supporting pages.

Only include sheets that are relevant to the project and required by the permitting package. Review parcel identifiers, site information, dimensions, and title-block details before export.

Add and arrange supporting pages

Use the plan-set editor to add the required generated sheets and supporting documents. Upload additional pages when the package needs engineering notes, jurisdiction forms, manufacturer documents, or other project-specific material. Reorder the pages so the exported package follows your company or permitting authority’s preferred sequence.

Review the coordinated drawings

Compare the roof and array sheets with the saved 2D and 3D design. String colours, equipment locations, annotations, and electrical information should agree across the drawing set. If one sheet reveals a design problem, correct the source design and regenerate the affected documents rather than masking the discrepancy with a note.

Export and store the documents

When the review is complete, generate the final PDF files. Powerlily stores generated design documents with the quote so the team can find the current plan set and SLD from the project’s Documents tab.

The project may also contain roof reports, shading and production reports, bills of materials, site information, images, and CAD or DXF outputs. Keep filenames and revision notes clear when a project has several submissions.

Regenerate after design changes

A change to modules, strings, inverters, storage, roof geometry, array placement, or interconnection details can make an older SLD or plan set stale. Save the revised design, regenerate the affected document, and review it again before distribution.

Refreshing one document does not automatically certify every other project document as current. Check the status and revision of each output you intend to use.

Final review checklist

  • The latest design has been saved.
  • All panels are intentionally assigned to strings or branches.
  • Electrical warnings have been resolved or documented.
  • Equipment and connection details match the project.
  • Site, roof, array, setback, and obstruction information is consistent across sheets.
  • Parcel and project identifiers are correct.
  • Supporting pages and product specifications are current.
  • The page order is correct.
  • The SLD and plan set have been reviewed by the responsible qualified professional.
  • The exported revision is the version being submitted or issued.
